situation

Untitled Mondays, a collective of creative women, was invited by the Architecture + Design Museum to submit a proposal for an exhibition intended to showcase the work of innovative designers within the Los Angeles community. The challenge was to design a proposal that would represent a collective ranging from architects to photographers rather than a singular creator.

Response

Functioning simultaneously as object, space, and experience, the proposal created a multi-layered installation whose multiplicity would represent the range of work and media the group engages with. Beyond being creators of the tangible, the members of Untitled Mondays also come together expressly to create experiences that explore new ways of engaging and connecting people.

The installation, Impromptu Rendezvous (#IRL), consists of two twenty-foot-long walls that enclose a three-foot-wide corridor. A scale model of Untitled Mondays' studio space is lodged in the center, dividing the corridor into two rooms. Maximum occupancy of Impromptu Rendezvous is two, and one is able to "visit" Untitled Mondays' studio by looking into the model. A door at either end allows entry in, each with a welcome mat that provides the invitation and a light that signals when the room is occupied. Two cameras embedded inside the model record the visitor(s), projecting their reactions onto the exterior wall.
