Intended as a weekend retreat for a busy couple with two grown daughters, the design of the 2,500 sf home was a study in how to configure program elements in order to optimize adjacencies and views and allow for flexibility in use, whether it is just the couple spending the weekend or they are joined by their daughters and extended family.

Site plan with views mapped to building footprint

The design divides the home into two halves, which are separated by the entry porch. The primary half houses the master suite and open living, dining, and kitchen area. The secondary half, which can be effectively closed off when not in use, houses the guest suites and garage.

The perimeter of the home is left as open as possible to preserve the views to the site. Service spaces such as the bathrooms, closets, and garage are conceptualized as solid volumes and thoughtfully considered in relation to the space within and views beyond in all design iterations.
